Qualification Information

Students will be able to:
(general competences)

  • think in a logical, abstract, analytical and synthetic way,

  • demonstrate knowledge of the history and development of geography, geoinformatics and cartography,
  • integrate geographical knowledge with knowledge of other natural science, social science and humanities disciplines,
  • use, analyse and synthesise knowledge acquired through autonomous study of academic texts in the field of geography and related disciplines,
  • demonstrate thorough and broad-based knowledge of the synthetic and complex character of the study of geography,
  • critically apply basic quantitative and qualitative methods and skills to the collection, storage, analysis and presentation of geographical data and information,
  • demonstrate understanding of basic facts about our solar system and the Earth as a planet,
  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of and evaluate the natural and social characteristics of Slovenia and their importance for the past, present and future development of the country,
  • demonstrate mastery of geographical research methods and procedures and spatial processes (knowledge of research in social and physical geography with an emphasis on the geographical study of population, settlement, economy, social and cultural geography),
  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of and evaluate the regional geographical characteristics of Slovenia, Europe and Russia, and selected continents (Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America and Australia with Oceania),
  • analyse in detail landscape development factors and their interconnectivity,
  • analyse and synthesise phenomena and processes in natural and social geography as a basis for understanding the principles of sustainable development at the regional, national and global levels and for responsible environmental management,
  • demonstrate understanding of the practical social value of geography,
  • lead study circles, extracurricular activities, research camps, workshops, project days and weeks, and fieldwork

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to complete a two-subject programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the study programme and the syllabuses of individual subjects, for a total of 90 credits. The overall programme is only completed when students have completed all course units in both chosen disciplines, as laid down by the study programmes and individual subject syllabuses, for a total of 180 credits.

  • vocational matura in any secondary school programme and an examination in the matura subject of Geography; if the candidate has already passed this subject in the vocational matura, an examination in any other matura subject (the selected subject may not be a subject which the candidate has already taken in the vocational matura); or
  • school-leaving examination (prior to 1 June 1995) under any four-year secondary school programme.
