Qualification Information

Students will be able to:
(general competences)

  • observe spatial phenomena and make interpretive connections between field study and theoretical study of the phenomena observed,
  • communicate, demonstrate technical literacy and critically verify written sources,
  • work in the field of the analysis, interpretation and direction of natural, social and spatial phenomena and processes,
  • demonstrate mastery of qualitative methods (analysis of texts, collecting accounts from informants in the field, semistructured/unstructured/structured interviews, etc.) and quantitative methods of research (telephone surveys, field surveys, online surveys, written surveys, analysis of social networks, analytical and complex mastery of cartographic and statistical methods in connection with computer-supported geographical information systems, etc.),
  • develop communication abilities and skills and critically assess and produce autonomous written texts (articles, reports, papers, etc.),
  • integrate and communicate information (interpret, contextualise and synthesise information so that it is comprehensible to the general public),
  • undertake critical assessment of current natural, social and political processes, and interpret and evaluate natural and social phenomena,
  • demonstrate a commitment to professional ethics and develop critical judgement that contributes to the objectivity of the results achieved,

(subject-specific competences)

  • show insight into the development of geographical science,
  • show insight into the development of the modern interdependence between various social and spatial systems,
  • demonstrate understanding of the basics of social geography and its sub-disciplines,
  • demonstrate understanding of the basics of physical geography and its sub-disciplines,
  • demonstrate understanding of the basic characteristics of the regional geography of the world and regional interdependence, similarities and differences,
  • demonstrate coherent mastery of core knowledge from the field of geographical research methodology and integrate this knowledge with knowledge from other fields,
  • offer an overview of the diversity of natural and social environments,
  • offer an overview of the thematic categories that analyse, each from its own point of view, social and spatial interdependence at the local, regional, national, macroregional and global levels,
  • demonstrate basic mastery of analytical and interpretive methods in geography,
  • place new information and interpretations in the context of spatial planning studies or physical, social and regional geography,
  • demonstrate understanding of the diversity and interdependence of a wide variety of social, cultural and natural spaces,
  • interpret processes and phenomena in the context of natural and social spaces, 
  • demonstrate multidisciplinary and complex understanding of phenomena in spatial, political, social, economic, cultural and other contexts at the local, national and international levels,
  • apply theoretical and practical research methods in understanding and orienting the interdependence of man and his social and natural environment,
  • demonstrate understanding of and help resolve problems in the management of the natural environment, planning of spatial and social systems, demographics, political geography and other fields.

  • vocational matura in any secondary school programme and an additional examination in the elective matura subject of Geography; if the candidate has already passed this subject in the vocational matura, an examination in any other matura subject (the selected subject may not be a subject which the candidate has already taken in the vocational matura); or
  • school-leaving examination (prior to 1 June 1995) under any four-year secondary school programme.

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
