The Directorate is an administrative institution in the field of education and its main objective is to improve quality and support progress in education in accordance with law and government policies, best evidence and international standards.
1. Knowledge and understanding
1.1. Doctoral students possess a clear and in-depth of all the fundamental elements of their special field of knowledge, as well as its main theories, concepts and terms and most recent developments. The level of understanding and expertise will be more extensive and deeper than that required at the previous degree level.
1.2. Doctoral students possess a firm grasp of their field of specialisation and show an excellent knowledge of all elements pertaining to that area field of specialisation.
1.3. Doctoral students are able to make important and innovatory contributions to their field of specialisation, either in the form of new knowledge or in the innovative utilisation and interpretation of previous knowledge.
1.4. Doctoral students possess a good understanding of the scientific and methodological aspects of the subject, both those that apply to its theory and to the general body of opinion concerning the subject, its ideas and ethical standards.
1.5. Doctoral students will be well aware of the financing of scientific research, how it is externally assessed and its practical application.
2. Types of knowledge
2.1. Doctoral students possess an extensive knowledge and understanding that they have developed via their own research and independent contribution, considered as important to their field of expertise.
2.2. Doctoral students have defined and presented original ideas in a clear manner and evolved new knowledge on the basis of substantial research that conforms to the standards set by prominent scholars in the relevant field.
3. Practical skills
3.1. Doctoral students possess knowledge and understanding that allows them to apply scientific methods with self-assurance and show initiative.
3.2. Doctoral students can engage in new and complex research projects with clear and systematic and clear divisions and goals.
3.3. Doctoral students understand the methodology applicable to their field of expertise and are able to engage in autonomous and original approaches to new and complex projects.
3.4. Doctoral students are able to employ the fundamentals and practical methods of their field of specialisation on a broad basis.
3.5. Doctoral students show originality and creativity in the development, presentation and practical use of new knowledge, understanding and methods.
4. Theoretical skills
4.1. Doctoral students have acquired critical and independent lines of thought in their specific areas of research and can present, account for and evolve scholarly ideas within that framework.
4.2. Doctoral students have employed new methods and/or traditional methods in new ways that add to or widen the existing body of knowledge in their field of specialisation.
4.3. Doctoral students have, with their own research, engaged in complex and new projects and brought them to a conclusion in an autonomous and well-informed manner.
4.4. Doctoral students have presented a significant and well-organised essay that is of a publishable standard according to recognised and critically edited international or domestic journals either.
4.5. Doctoral students have held public lectures in their field of specialisation at international and/or domestic conferences.
4.6. Doctoral students will have written a doctoral dissertation of significant length and scope (75,000-100,000 words) that is accepted as presentable for a defence before the parties appointed by the University of Iceland.
5. Communication, dissemination and informational skills
5.1. Doctoral students are capable of successfully explaining their field of specialisation to their peers, other scholars and the general public.
5.2. Doctoral students are capable of successfully participating in cooperative ventures, whether it is with their dissertation supervisors, their peers or employees of institutions or scholarly associations, both in the context of critical debate and the exchange of opinions concerning scholarly materials.
5.3. Doctoral students are able to present and defend aspects of their research both orally in seminars or in oral examinations as well as to present and defend the same to directors of research and academic institutions and directors of research funds.
5.4. Doctoral students are able to participate fully in the rationalisation and justification of arguments within their field of expertise as well as in the public forum as autonomous scholars. They are also able to disseminate their expertise via the media of debate and critical writings, and therefore effect a broadening of education and knowledge within the community at large.
5.5. Doctoral students show professional autonomy and initiative, bear a responsibility for their own work, are capable of directing and accepting responsibility for the work of others and can inform and teach others the methodology of research and scholarly endeavours.
5.6. Doctoral students will have experience of instruction at the university level in their field of expertise.
5.7. Doctoral students can apply the relevant software utilisable within their field of studies to present and explain their research results as well as to use that software to critically assess and present statistical and visual information.
6. General skills
6.1. Doctoral students are able to gather information and knowledge in a precise and successful manner.
6.2. Doctoral students have adopted a critical standpoint towards knowledge development, breadth of perspective, accuracy and care in its methodology and conclusions.
6.3. Doctoral students gather information and knowledge with the highest possible degree of objectivity at any given time.
