  7. Engineering Design- Master

Bachelor in engineering with knowledge in materials, mechanics and modelling, but also others may be suited to the masters programme in engineering design. Special interest in understanding mathematical and physical theories and descriptions of for instance different constuction behaviours, design processeses, materials behaviour may be a benefit for maximizing the learning outcome in the education. Engineering Design, is design based on engineering science and includes knowledge about product design and computational technology. The main ingredients in Engineering Design is technical scientific computations/calculations and applied mathematics, which is applied to problems related to design, geometry and materials science. Engineering Design courses provides students with an understanding of design and aesthetic design in addition to deep understanding of mathematical and physical principles and methods in the design process. We place special emphasis on the geometry and shape, product and design processes, strength calculations and analysis, materials, computer-based modeling and simulations.   The main feature of a product is that it can withstand the stresses it is intended to be exposed to. For example, design and materials adapted to extreme heat or cold, heavy loads over long or short time, and electric or thermal radiation. Sometimes the friction should be as large as possible, while other times it should be as small as possible. Flexible hinges (eg, plastic tops) should withstand being opened and close ...

  8. English Acquisition and Multilingualism- master

The programme is well suited for students who are interested in studying how English is acquired in first and second language settings, as well as how the English language is affected by multilingual situations. In individual speakers, multilingual situations may cause one language to influence another, in particular in the acquisition process, and may ultimately also result in language attrition due to the lack of exposure and use of one of the languages. In societies, multilingualism and language contact may result in the development of new varieties of the language. Students admitted to the programme will be closely integrated into the research group in Language Acquisition, Variation and Attrition (LAVA: http://site.uit.no/lava/), which is an active and productive research group working on various aspects of multilingualism and multilingual language acquisition. The students will get the opportunity to carry out hand-on research with the members of the group. The programme provides a good foundation for work related to multilingualism in both the private and the public sector, and is well suited for students who want to pursue a career within research. The Master comprises a course component of 60 ECTS and a thesis of 60 ECTS. The course work consists of five compulsory modules; two of these will run in the Autumn (first semester) and three will be offered in the Spring (second semester): ENG-3040 First Language Acquisition (10 ECTS) ENG-3050 Second Language Acquisition (10 ECTS) ENG-3060 Multilingualism ...

The master's programme in English literature gives students the opportunity to study a broad range of literary and cultural texts in English, while specializing in an area of their choice under the leadership of a researcher in that field. The English section can offer supervision in English, Irish, American and post-colonial literatures, and is particularly strong in the areas of romanticism, modernism, and contemporary literature. Each year, students are offered courses organized around socially-relevant themes, key literary periods and genres, and/or prominent authors. All master's level courses include training in secondary research and literary theory, practice in close analysis, and feedback on students' written work. In moving from coursework to the master's thesis, students move toward a more specialized focus and more independent research. This research is supported by each student's supervisor and by a series of organized work-in-progress seminars targeting the skills needed for master's-level research. The programme consis ...
