The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) is a translation tool that helps communication and comparison between qualifications systems in Europe. Its eight common European reference levels are described in terms of learning outcomes: knowledge, skills and competences. This allows any national qualifications systems, national qualifications frameworks (NQFs) and qualifications in Europe to relate to the EQF levels. Learners, graduates, providers and employers can use these levels to understand and compare qualifications awarded in different countries and by different education and training systems.

    The goal of the master’s degree programme in sociology is to train highly qualified specialists who can do independent work in research, continue their academic career whilst pursuing doctorate studies, and work in those areas of the profession which relate to sociology – social and marketing research, management of society, analysis of social policy and management of social work. The programme leads to the awarding of an academic master’s degree in sociology. In pursuit of this goal, the aims of the programme are the following: - to train highly qualified specialists in the fields of sociology, social policy and management of social work so as to satisfy the requirements related to Latvia’s social development; - to ensure knowledge about contemporary theoretical developments in sociology; - to develop research and analytical skills, train students to engage in independent scientific and resarch work in sociology and in the relevant areas of the profession; to apply their knowledge in unfamiliar environments and within broader and multidisciplinary contexts related to their field of study; - to teach students to use their knowledge and skills in the governance of society and to develop their skills in identifying, analysing and resolving social problems, as well as establishing and evaluating plans of action; - to ensure that students have a scientific and humane understanding of society.     The goal of the programme is to prepare academically educated and professionally qualified specialists who would meet the demands of Latvian society, state and municipal institutions, possess in-depth knowledge on theories and research methods, have necessary skills in collecting and analysing information, would be able to evaluate social processes from a sociological perspective, would be competitive in the labour market as well as able to carry out research and take part in the processes of public administration.
