Course Information

The total amount of credit points is 30 credits and it includes:

 

Field specific studies 24-26 credits:

- Research plan seminar 4 credits

- Review of the literature related to the doctoral research area 4 credits

- Field-specific methodology and specialization courses 4 credits

- Doctoral examination in the relevant field 6-10 credits

- Conferences 2 credits

- Kaamos symposium 2 credits

- Other supporting minor or major studies 0-4 credits

 

General and transferrable skills studies 4 credits:

- Introduction to UniOGS 1 credit

- Research ethics 2 credits

- Follow-up group meetings and reporting 1 credit

 

Teaching tasks 0-2 credits (when the student has passed at least 2 credits of university pedagogical studies)

 

In addition, the studies include learning and performing research and writing of the doctoral thesis.

The aim of the doctoral studies at the Department of Biology is to provide skills for the student to work in academic or non-academic expert positions, both nationally and internationally.

In the Biology doctoral programme, it is possible to choose either ecology or genetics and physiology as the major. Research in ecology is focused on evolutionary, behaviour, population, molecular and community ecology and on adaptation to north,with strong links to conservation biology. In genetics and physiology, most of the research at present is at the fields of genetics of adaptations, evolutionary genetics, developmental biology and biotechniqal applications.

The learning outcomes for the students are that after the graduation, the student is:

1) profoundly acquainted to his/her study field

2) able to independently and critically aply the research methods of the field, capable to identify research possibilities and produce new scientific infromation

3) acquainted with the concepts, theories and development in the field

4) able to work as an expert in the field and lead projects, nationally and internationally and has good networking skills

5) able to communicate orally and written in academic and non-academic environments

6) able to continuously learn and develop learning skills.
