  1. Atmosphere, Climate and Ecosystems, Master's Programme

Air pollution and climate change and its effect on ecosystems and human health are globally major challenges today and in the future. The Atmosphere, Climate and Ecosystems (ACE) Master Programme gives you the chance to learn how human activities are linked to physical and chemical properties of the atmosphere, climate and ecosystems and how related problems can be mitigated. You get the opportunity to take both fundamental and applied courses in the fields of atmospheric, climatic, earth and ecosystem sciences. The fundamental courses give you the tools needed to understand and analyse problems related to the interaction between atmosphere, climate and ecosystems. The applied courses are directly related to certain important ACE issues, such as mitigation, international agreements, global change and energy systems. The program is research oriented with leading researchers in ACE areas as teachers in the courses and up to a full year of thesis work done in a research group. Career opportunitiesThe aim of ACE is to prepare you for research or administrative tasks where solid knowledge in atmospheric, climate and ecosystem science is of concern. Typically, after passing this master programme, you could initiate an academic career, conduct research on industrial applications or be an expert advisor within the governmental or business sector. Outline of the programThe program starts with two mandatory courses (Sep-Nov): Global change - problem, analysis, measures (ES2613) 7.5 hec Climate change in an earth system p ...

  4. Master Programme in Sustainable Development

The Master Programme in Sustainable Development is truly interdisciplinary, with students and tutors from many different subject areas who all share an interest in sustainable development. As a graduate of the programme you will be fully versed in issues that concern sustainable development from most perspectives - from basic economic to very concrete aspects, such as how sufficient drinking water can be made available to everyone on our planet. The objective of this Master's programme is to enable you to utilise aspects of sustainable development in your future professional activity, irrespective of what you work with. This could be urban planning, education, research, business administration, natural resource management, policy and decision making and much more. Teaching takes place both at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), which is also located in Uppsala. Normally, you will take two courses in parallel. Teaching is usually composed of lectures, computer and field exercises, as well as seminars where you discuss both your own written work and that of others. Group work is often carried out in interdisciplinary teams. The language of instruction is English, although in certain cases reports and minor assignments may be written in Swedish. The first semester introduces a variety of natural and social science perspectives on sustainable development. The second semester focuses on environmental assessments, decision-making processes and interdisciplinary methods. An i ...

  8. Master's Programme in Environmental Science- Atmosphere, Biogeochemistry and Climate

This program will give you the environmental science perspective on grand challenges of our society such as air and water quality, and climate change. You will get fundamental knowledge of the composition and functioning of the environmental compartments: the atmosphere ? the freshwater and ocean ? and the land systems. It also gives the earth and environmental systems understanding of how these compartments interact through transport, energy balances, the water and carbon cycles. A central part of this program is to gain a deeper understanding of how anthropogenic perturbations affect these natural systems. The first course ?Large Scale Challenges to Climate and Environment? (15 credits) will present the sources, effects and mitigation options for key challenges. The second half of the first semester is a course on ?Atmosphere, Biogeosphere, and Climate Change? (15 credits). This is then followed by a semester of elective courses in Biogeochemistry, Atmospheric and Climate Sciences and related disciplines, and a semester of optional courses. Finally, you will perform a Master?s degree project (thesis), in close association with one of the many strong research groups in our department. ...

  10. Master's Programme in Ecology and Biodiversity

Biological diversity on Earth is under threat and the rapid extinction of species and populations is one of the major problems that mankind face today. Differences between species can be understood in the light of evolution, partly as a result of adaptation to different environments through natural selection, and partly as a result of random events such as climate change. Ecology is the study of which factors affect the distribution and diversity of species, and how species are adapted to the world around them through competition, predation and mutualism. This includes studies of individuals, populations, communities, and ecosystems, in an attempt to understand the complicated networks of relationships between species, their environment and the climate. Humans today influence the conditions for many species and we need to understand factors and processes that cause biodiversity to decrease and be lost. The Master's Programme in Ecology and Biodiversity provides wide-ranging opportunities for students to tailor their education to obtain the profile desired. A final degree project in ecology is compulsory, as are the courses in Experimental Design and Science in Biological Research and Investigation. These courses are taken in parallel with the degree project. The courses Evolutionary Ecology and Biodiversity: Patterns and Processes are compulsory parts of the programme. The student can choose further courses in, for example, Interactions in Ecological Socities and Molecular Ecology. It is also possible to includ ...
