Course Information

Those who have completed the Vocational Qualification in Natural and Environmental Protection specialising as Environmental Operatives may work in remediation or management of built-up or natural environments. Those specialising as Nature Instructors may work in nature-related instruction assignments within tourism, leisure and wellness services. Those specialising as Natural Resources Producers may work as experts in nature-based production that makes use of local nature in a sustainable manner. Those specialising as Nature and Environmental Advisors may guide citizens towards responsible consumption as advisors and instructors working for local authorities, organisations and business enterprises, as planners responsible for drawing up sustainable development programmes and as producers of information materials. Those specialising as Reindeer Herders may work as reindeer herders or within the tourism industry, either as independent entrepreneurs or employees. Nature and environmental occupations are increasing and expanding. Acting in a sustainable way and learning a sustainable lifestyle form a basis for future services and business life.

Candidates must be able to follow everyday operations and make proposals to change these in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. They must be able to observe and report on the state of the environment. They must be able to recognise local species of plants and animals and use these to determine the quality of the environment. They must know how to plan remediation and to remediate natural and built-up environments. They must know how to move about and work in an environmentally friendly manner. They must know how to equip themselves and camp properly in nature in all seasons. They must take safety and responsibility into account. They must know how to use and service gear and equipment. They must promote operating methods in line with sustainable development.

Candidates taking the Study Programme or Competence Area in Environmental Protection (Environmental Operative) must know how to perform environmental management and remediation work. They must comply with cost estimates. They must know how to use the most common equipment and machinery required for environmental remediation work. They must be able to assess environmental impacts and carry out studies on the state of the environment. They must know how to take samples and perform measurements on these and to use field surveying equipment.

Candidates taking the Study Programme or Competence Area in Nature-based Services specialising as Nature Instructors must be able to work with different customer groups in nature. They must command customer service with diverse customers coming from different cultures. They must be able to tell them about nature and culture and to organise meals and other services in cross-country conditions. They must be familiar with the principles of business and marketing.

Those taking the Study Programme or Competence Area in Nature-based Services specialising as Natural Resources Producers must know how to make use of nature in a sustainable manner. They may gather or cultivate wild plants. They must be able to work with businesses and institutions providing forestry, agricultural, food, cottage industry and nature and wellness services. They must command product safety, product development, quality management and marketing.

Those taking the Study Programme or Competence Area in Nature-based Services specialising as Nature and Environmental Advisors must know how to guide citizens towards responsible consumption. They must be familiar with the backgrounds of and reasons for environmental issues. They must be able to assess the environmental impacts and risks of operations. They must know how to advise businesses, organisations, educational institutions and the public sector on planning operations in line with sustainable development. They must possess good co-operation, negotiation and organisation skills. They must be able to condense extensive information and draw conclusions.

Candidates taking the Study Programme or Competence Area in Reindeer Farming (Reindeer Herder) must know how to provide reindeer with appropriate conditions for natural nutrition and reproduction. They must be able to co-operate with representatives of other nature-based and environmental occupations. They must be able to work in line with the principles of sustainable development. They must know how to use machinery and equipment as well as information technology. They must command the principles of marketing and cost accounting.
