The University of Azores was created in 9 January 1976 as a result of a policy of expansion of higher education in Portugal. At first, the university searched to respond the multiple needs of staff training in the region, to raise its cultural level and to promote its scientific and technological development. Today, the level of development that has been achieved in Azores finds in the action developed by the University one of the main sources of strength. The various areas of teaching and research at the University increased deeply the knowledge of the complex reality of the sea, land, life, history, society and, in general, the culture of the islands.

The UAc has a tripolar structure, with centers in the cities of Ponta Delgada (where is the headquarters, the main services and the rectory), Angra do Heroísmo and Horta. The university structure is organized in academic departments, that are units designed to the continuous achievement of education and research. The University also includes the polytechnic higher education, which includes the Schools of Nursing of Ponta Delgada and Angra do Heroísmo.

Have successfully completed secondary school or have an equivalent qualification

Have completed one of the following university entrance exams (central exams prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science): Economy; or History; or Portuguese Language

Admission Procedure: 

Applications are done through the national admission contest (concurso nacional de acesso) organized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES), or through special higher education contests. For more informations please check DGES website (in portuguese).

Grants: 

There are some institutions in Portugal that give scholarships to international students and it is advisable that applicants confirm every year whether these grants are available and the eligibility terms: The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical ExperienceFulbright.
