  2. Chemistry

    The discipline Chemistry deals with the three sub-areas of chemistry, i.e. biological chemistry, material chemistry and computer-aided chemistry. The discipline covers the principles, laws, techniques and methods of chemistry. The examination subjects in the master’s programme “Chemistry” include inorganic and organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical and theoretical chemistry, environmental chemistry and technical chemistry. The elective course catalogues include laboratory courses, chemistry, electives in chemistry and soft skills. The elective subjects that can be chosen freely can be chosen from the whole range of courses of all Austrian universities; subjects such as mathematics, nomenclature of chemical compounds, introduction to technological impact assessment or women and gender research, however, are recommended. A few supplementary subjects are also required. A study period abroad is supported. To complete the programme a master’s thesis must be written, which should be thematically oriented on the compulsory subjects. ...

    In the degree programme in Computational Logic learning methods are developed and examined to convey the ability to draw logical conclusions, apply them to software agents (programmes) and thus to give them artificial intelligence.     The Computer Mathematics course deals with the computer-based resolution of mathematical problems and the conversion of mathematical objects by means of algorithms into forms that can be processed by computers. The master's programme in Computer Mathematics consists of compulsory and elective subjects. From the subject area of "Algorithmic Mathematics" students have to complete the compulsory subjects "Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry", "Stochastic Simulation", and "Algorithmic Combinatorics". The subject area of "Software Technology" comprises the compulsory subjects "Practical Software Technology" and "Formal Methods in Software Development". From the area of "Mathematical Logic" students have to complete the course "Mathematical Logic 1".     Visual Computing beschäftigt sich mit Grundlagen, Technologie und Anwendungen der systematischen und automatisierten Informationsverarbeitung. Sie liefert Methoden und Werkzeuge, um komplexe Systeme in Naturwissenschaft, Technik und anderen Bereichen des menschlichen Lebens beherrschen zu können, und setzt dazu sowohl mathematisch-formale als auch ingenieurwissenschaftliche Arbeitsweisen ein. Die Lehrveranstaltungen des Masterstudiums gliedern sich in die drei Bereiche: Basisfach (Pflicht), Vertiefungsfach (Wahl) sowie freie Wahlfächer und Soft Skills, zu denen jeweils aus dem vorgesehenen Katalog Lehrveranstaltungen belegt werden können. Im Rahmen des Masterstudiums ist auch ein universitäres Praktikum zu absolvieren. Die studienabschließende Masterprüfung besteht aus dem Einreichen der Zeugnisse für die vorgeschriebenen Lehrveranstaltungen und der Beurteilung der Masterarbeit.     The biophysics programme enables students to understand the world and its smallest parts by means of logics and the already defined constants of nature. On the basis of mathematical models and experiments fundamental connexions and fundamental answers to physics issues are to be found. Thus the main aim of the discipline is the training of logical thinking and the learning of problem resolution methods. Compulsory examination subjects of this master’s programme include “Microscopy of biomolecules”, “Molecular biology of cells I”, Characterisation of bio-nanostructures”, “Biological signalling I”, “Theoretical biophysics I”, Biochemistry and specialisations in biophysics (II-IV). Moreover, students have to complete the “Biophysics placement II”. Towards the end of the programme students have to write a master’s thesis.
