Workplace learning

Study type which involves the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences through carrying out – and reflecting on – tasks in a vocational context, either at the workplace (such as alternance training) or in a vocational education and training institution


Limited period of time spent at an enterprise or organisation in order to gain work experience and specific skills and competences required by the labour market through on-the-job training. Trainees are typically people having recently completed their education, participating in a traineeship ahead of taking up regular employment.

Education designed for learners who, for a wide variety of reasons, require additional support and adaptive pedagogical methods in order to reach learning objectives in an education programme

Short cycle or equivalent

The short-cycle is practically-based, leading to qualifications that are occupationally specific and prepare learners to enter the labour market

The short cycle is often an independent part of the first cycle in the Qualifications Framework for the European Higher Education Area (equivalent to ISCED Level 5). The descriptors of the short cycle correspond to the learning outcomes of EQF level 5.
