Euronews OCEAN Season 3 Episode 9 - Protecting the Antarctica

Euronews ocean

Fragile ecosystems of Antarctica are threatened by climate change and overfishing, and the EU is leading international efforts to study and protect marine life along the shores of the southern continent. In anticipation of an important meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in October, this episode will shed light on the current status of the endeavor to designate two large zones in the region as marine protected areas — a European diplomatic effort co-sponsored by the U.S. and New Zealand, while Russia and China with their large fisheries interest seem to be dragging their feet.

We meet European researchers back from a scientific expedition studying how Antarctic biodiversity is reacting to environmental pressures, and talk to Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment, Ocean and Fisheries, about the challenging diplomatic aspect of the conservation efforts in Antarctica.

Tune in to Euronews from 14 September @ 20:50 CET – on any platform.
