|
On 4 September, EU Trade Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, spoke at the 2019 Bruegel Annual Meeting about current developments in trade and the importance of evidence-based policy making. Her speech, entitled 'Truths about trade', addressed some of the common misconceptions around trade and trade policy.

Trade for Her: Empowering Women through International Trade
|
On 30 September 2019, EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström will host the 'Trade for Her' conference to find out how to achieve greater involvement of women in international trade, in the EU and beyond. The conference will look into the results of the first ever study on barriers faced by women in the European Union who are engaged in international trade. High-level representatives from international organisations, governments, businesses and civil society, will share their experiences, views and ideas on women in trade. Registration closes on 23 September 2019.

Stakeholder meeting on the establishment of a multilateral investment court
|
On 9 October, the European Commission is holding a stakeholder meeting on the multilateral reform of investment dispute resolution including the establishment of a multilateral investment court. The purpose of the meeting is to update stakeholders on the latest developments in this area at the EU and international level and to exchange views on the latest relevant EU policy developments. Please register before Thursday 26 September 12:00 CET.

Evaluation of the Euro-Med trade agreements
|
The European Commission has launched an ex-post evaluation of the trade agreements between the EU and six partner countries in the Southern Mediterranean region (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia). A public consultation will feed into this evaluation. The objective of the public consultation is to hear concrete examples, evidence and experiences of stakeholders (in particular enterprises, including SMEs) about the opportunities and challenges resulting from the free trade agreements. Issues related to social, environmental and human rights impacts should also be commented on. The questionnaire is available in English, French, German and Arabic. Please send your response before 27 November 2019 (midnight Brussels time).

European Commission adopts mandate to extend interim appeal arbitration arrangement
|
On 4 September, the European Commission adopted a decision laying the groundwork to deal with the consequences of a possible blockage of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Appellate Body, the highest instance of WTO dispute resolution. This decision will enable the European Commission to enter into interim appeal arbitration arrangements with third countries based on existing World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules.

Commission proposes adjustments to the existing safeguards for steel
|
On 14 August, the European Commission presented a proposal for adjustments to the existing safeguard measures for steel. The investigation conducted since mid-May 2019 showed that the measures have overall worked well during the first year of implementation. The adjustments notified to the World Trade Organization (WTO) aim, however, to make them more effective in full compliance with WTO rules.

Commission imposes countervailing duties on Indonesian biodiesel
|
On 13 August, the European Commission imposed countervailing duties of 8% to 18% on imports of subsidised biodiesel from Indonesia. The measure aims to restore a level-playing field for EU biodiesel producers. The new import duties are imposed on a provisional basis and the investigation will continue with a possibility to impose definitive measures by mid-December 2019.

EU requests WTO dispute settlement panel over Turkey’s measures on pharmaceuticals
|
On 2 August, the EU has requested the establishment of a panel at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Turkey’s unlawful measures on the importation and sale of pharmaceuticals. The dispute with Turkey concerns measures that force foreign pharmaceutical producers to move their production to the country if they want their medicines to be eligible for reimbursement for consumers under the Turkish health system.
