Beating Cancer Inequalities in the EU: Spotlight on Cancer Prevention and Early Detection - Online launch event: 5 February, 14.30 – 16.45

On Monday 5 February 2024, there will be an online event to launch the new report '"Beating Cancer Inequalities in the EU: Spotlight on prevention and early detection” prepared by the Commission, in collaboration with the OECD.

The report outlines policies and actions that should be implemented to tackle inequalities in cancer care across the EU 27, Norway and Iceland. A specific focus is placed on addressing preventable risk factors and improving screening and early diagnosis, to counter concerning cancer trends and inequalities. Country performance, cross-cutting challenges and new developments are examined, with particular attention to disparities by regions, socio-economic status and gender.

The report shows that there is a lot of work to be done to address the increasing burden of cancer and inequalities that surround it. Investing in comprehensive prevention policies and ensuring widespread reach of screening and early diagnoses will make a major dent in Europe’s cancer trends in the years to come. Inclusive approaches to cancer prevention and cancer control policies should be scaled up, including fiscal, regulatory and health systems organisation tools, and initiatives that can be undertaken in primary care, workplaces, and schools. Particular emphasis should be placed on vulnerable groups, to better control cancer, counter inequalities and improve the health and well-being of all Europeans.

As the third milestone of the European Cancer Inequalities Registry, the report marks the closure of the first reporting cycle of the initiative, building on the work achieved through the Data Tool and the 2023 Country Cancer Profiles.

Tune in to the virtual launch event of the report on 5 February from 14.30-16.45 at this link.
