Animal welfare: 14th meeting of the EU Platform taking place, today

Today, DG SANTE will host the 14th meeting of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare.

The meeting will provide an opportunity to inform the participants of the animal welfare package, which will be adopted by the Commission this morning. This package will be made up of two major legislative proposals on animal welfare and the Commission's formal reply to the European Citizens Initiative, "Fur Free Europe".

Commissioner Kyriakides will personally express her gratitude to the members of the Platform for their valuable input during the preparatory stage of these proposals.

The Platform members will have the opportunity to follow the live broadcast of a press conference where Executive Vice-President Šefčovič and Commissioner Kyriakides will present the adopted package in more detail.

The first legislative proposal aims to revise EU rules on the protection of animals during transport. The second proposal – the first of its kind at EU level – concerns the welfare of dogs and cats and their traceability. In addition, the Commission will also adopt a formal response to the European Citizens' Initiative, Fur Free Europe.

The upcoming package reflects the Commission's commitment to animal welfare, while the rich agenda of the meeting proves that the Platform is a pivotal forum for initiatives and exchanges on animal welfare.

The meeting will be web-streamed (from 09:15 CET today, the 7 December).
