33rd EU Contest for Young Scientists: and the winner is…
The European Union’s top prizes for young scientists were announced during the EU Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) award ceremony in Leiden’s Stadsgehoorzaal, following a five-day competition among 132 promising young scientists aged 14 to 20, coming from 33 countries.

Commissioner Gabriel said:

"Congratulations to all winners of this year’s contest on their outstanding achievements. The last two years have been dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have also taught us the importance of investing in excellent science, research and innovation. Once again, EUCYS celebrates our brightest future scientists and innovators, who are essential in helping us to move forward with confidence in a post-pandemic era. I'm sure you will go on to achieve even greater things!"

1st EU TalentOn: discover all the winners!
The winning teams of the first-ever edition of EU TalentOn were announced during the EU TalentOn award ceremony in Leiden’s Stadsgehoorzaal, following a four-day competition among 104 young researchers aged 21 to 35.

Commissioner Gabriel said:

"Congratulations to all the winning teams of the first EU TalentOn on their impressive projects. Even though the challenges we are facing are considerable, I believe that the contribution of these young research talents will shape not only the future of science, but also the prosperity of the European Union as a whole. For the first time of many, EU TalentOn celebrates our bright young minds’ ideas on the five EU Missions and how to offer concrete solutions to our most salient issues. I am proud of our youth’s inspiring work."

SOFT Innovation Prize: three researchers awarded
This prize, awarded at the 32nd Symposium on Fusion Technology (SOFT2022), gives recognition to outstanding researchers or industries who have found innovative ideas or proposed new solutions in fusion research.

Commissioner Gabriel said:

"We need to maintain and further develop the technological leadership and excellence of our fusion research community. Fusion researchers are constantly challenging the current limits of scientific knowledge and creating conditions for innovation. Supporting future technologies as well as staying at the cutting edge of scientific frontiers is vital to keep Europe competitive and to create new spin-offs and highly skilled jobs. The 2022 SOFT Innovation Prize is a step towards the success of fusion energy."
