EU Cohesion Policy: €114 million for a new section of the S1 expressway in Poland

Today, the European Commission has approved an investment of more than €114 million from the Cohesion Fund for a new section of the S1 expressway between Kosztowy and Bielsko-Biała in Poland.

The 26.74 km section will have two traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each direction. The work involves construction of engineering structures such as bridges, viaducts, and culverts; roads to service adjacent areas; animal passages; and infrastructural elements including footpaths, cycle paths and emergency access routes and exits. Transport, energy, telecommunications, water, and sewerage networks will be adapted to accommodate the road. A traffic management system, road safety infrastructure such as safety barriers, fences, anti-glare screens and markings, noise barriers, and lighting will be installed. In addition, a rainwater drainage system with a storm sewer and pumping station, and pre-treatment equipment for rainwater will be set up. Roadside greenery will be planted.

By improving road connections in Poland, the project will enable the road network to handle forecast traffic volumes, and allow safe, high-speed long-distance travel.

More efficient road transport will facilitate the free movement of people and goods, boosting the EU's external competitiveness and internal economic, social and territorial cohesion, and create conditions for local socio-economic development.

The new road will relieve adjacent areas of excessive traffic, which will reduce exhaust emissions and noise and improve living conditions for residents.
