Spanning the whole of Hungary – EU funds build 670 kms of road, rail, tram and metro lines

On 6 November 2023, the European Commission’s Directorate for Regional and Urban Policy attended the closure event of Hungary’s cohesion policy programme 2014-2020 for Transport.

The Integrated Transport Operational Programme 2014-2020 supported road, railway and waterway and public transport and infrastructure projects with more than EUR 3.3 billion. The programme supported projects such as the M25 highway connection to Eger, the Intermodal Passenger Transport Centre in Debrecen or the reconstruction of the Budapest metro line 3, inaugurated last May.

With the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund, in total more than 670 kms of road, rail, tram or metro line infrastructure were built or reconstructed in Hungary – an equivalent spanning the whole country from its most western village Felsőszölnök to its most eastern counterpart Garbolc.

As part of the closure event at Balatonfüred, Hungary put under the spotlight two projects that contribute in the region to Hungary’s commitment to achieve a 90% reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 :

  • The electrification of part of the railway section around the northside of Lake Balaton, including the reconstruction and modernisation of railway stations, reducing travel time on rail and improving accessibility at railway stations (EU contribution EUR 54 million).
  • The technical upgrading of more than 120 passenger train units, bringing passenger trains to the latest standard, increasing safety and improving comfort for travellers (EU contribution EUR 12.2 million).
