Cohesion Policy Funds help to open new Centre of Energy and Environmental Technology - Explorer in Czechia

Today, in Ostrava, the Commission and Czechia inaugurated a new research facility – the Energy and Environment Technology Centre – Explorer (CEETe) – which will bring the EU closer to its ambitious climate goals and will support the Moravia-Silesia region in its transition away from coal.

Thanks to the European Regional Development Fund, the EU co-financed the development of the research facility with EUR 8.5 million in funding.

The new generation centre integrates research, development and market applicability, with the aim of helping all industrial partners affected by the energy transition to meet the goals of carbon neutrality and the targets set out by the European Green Deal. Researchers will be able to test new and modern technologies by using modern, low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen. These projects take place at an important juncture in EU policy as the EU breaks away from its dependence on fossil fuels and transitions to a net zero economy.

Thanks to the project, new sustainable technologies will be put into practice to compensate for the gradual phase-out of coal and will produce energy in a more sustainable way. The research facility will specifically help the Moravia-Silesia region in its transition from a coal region to a modern, self-sufficient, energy-producing region that values the quality of life of its inhabitants.

During the period 2014-2020, a total of EUR 22.6 billion in Cohesion Policy Funds was invested into Czechia, with EUR 2.3 billion granted for research & innovation alone, of which EUR 8.5 million helped co-finance this new centre.
