European Union contributes 4.5 million euros to the creation of the Tecnico Innovation Centre

In October, the city of Lisbon will witness the inauguration of the "Tecnico Innovation Centre", an infrastructure for the development and transfer of technology, which rehabilitates and requalifies the old buildings left over from the Arco do Cego bus station. This is a complementary structure to the Instituto Superior Técnico's Alameda campus, which aims to create a new dynamic in the existing space by welcoming new teaching and non-teaching facilities needed for the Alameda Campus to function.

The European Union, through the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme (Lisboa 2020), contributed around 4.5 million euros to this project with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), for an investment of over 11 million euros.

On the inauguration ceremony will be speaking the President of the European Commission Representation in Portugal, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, the President of the Instituto Superior Técnico, Rogério Colaço, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of Fidelidade, Rogério Campos Henriques and the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Luís Ferreira.

Within the scope of Lisbon 2020, the Lisbon Region chose to focus its efforts on projects that promote research, technological development, innovation and increased competitiveness of SMEs, education and lifelong learning, among others, with the aim of making the Lisbon Region more competitive in the global economy, more inclusive in terms of access to the labour market for young people and more sustainable in terms of the use of resources.

The "Tecnico Innovation Centre" aims to create a space for developing links with companies, mutual collaboration in the areas of innovation, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, while offering society a multi-purpose space for promoting technological, scientific, cultural and educational events such as workshops, seminars and exhibitions, bringing the academic community, the business community and the general public closer together.

The investment in this new infrastructure will increase the region's scientific and technological capacity, with repercussions for the business community, boosting the regional and national economy and strengthening the competitiveness of the Lisbon region in the innovation ecosystem, while also improving local services.

The technological infrastructure will make it possible to enhance and project Lisbon's image, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the region, namely by strengthening scientific capacities and creating opportunities for economic development.
