Smart Regions: Project “Ecomare” protects marine biodiversity and provides care to injured animals

The ECOMARE project in Aveiro, Portugal, has two objectives: Sustainability and the conservation and rehabilitation of marine life.

Scientists and researchers working on this European initiative, promoted by the University of Aveiro, are investigating the impact of climate change on marine flora and fauna and are also taking care of injured animals.

The CEPAM hospital for injured animals is open 24 hours a day and has the capacity to treat more than 1,000 animals per year. Visitors are also allowed to come to the CEPAM centre on the third Wednesday of every month for educational purposes. There, visitors learn about the importance of protecting marine biodiversity.

The project has a total budget of €4.8 million of which almost 85% is co-financed by the EU’s cohesion policy.
