EU Cohesion Policy: More than €52 million to support the purchase of 37 electric trains in Romania

More than €52 million from the European Regional Development Fund will be allocated to support the purchase of 37 electrical trains for 13 interregional routes in Romania following today’s approval of this project by the Commission.

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said: “The new multiple unit trains will have a positive impact throughout the entire railway network in Romania. Increasing the frequency and comfort of the rides and incentivising the use of trains is important for territorial and social cohesion, facilitating access to jobs and public services to all. It improves the sustainability of transport, thus contributing to  the green transition. Cohesion Policy works hand in hand with the Romanian authorities to roll out the European Green Deal objectives.”

With the capacity to accommodate a minimum of 300 passengers per train, this investment will significantly improve the quality of railway services on the main interregional electrified rail corridors linking Bucharest to regional hubs such as Arad, Cluj-Napoca, Constanța, Brașov, Timișoara, Iași, Galați, Craiova, Petroșani and Suceava.

The introduction of these state-of-the-art electric trains will improve the connectivity and the comfort for passengers and reduce transport emissions.
