SDGs in Europe: regions join forces to design a new monitoring system

Save the date and follow live a series of local events, focusing on how to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in EU regions.

A shared system to monitor SDGs regionally is necessary to ensure that they are translated into meaningful local strategies across Europe. To this end, ten European pilot regions have joined forces to co-design and develop a robust framework of indicators, in the framework of the pilot project ‘REGIONS2030: Monitoring the SDGs in the EU regions - Filling the data gaps’.

The project is a collaboration between the European Parliament, the European Commission (Joint Research Centre, DG REGIO, EUROSTAT) and 10 European pilot regions. Its objective is to design and test a common set of indicators to monitor all SDGs regionally in Europe.

10 experts have worked with each region and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) to test locally the indicators set, and the results have now been published as dedicated reports. Building on these results, the 10 participating regions, in collaboration JRC, are organising a series of events to broaden up the discussion, mobilize local stakeholders, provide inputs and support for data collection and analysis, share best practices, and improve collaboration amongst institutions around SDGs monitoring.

Two events already took place in June and July in Greece and offered the opportunity to identify priorities and cooperation opportunities. In the coming weeks, 8 regions will host further events, enriching the discussion with a variety of approaches:
