Germany: EU co-funded geothermal heating plant in Schwerin is being officially inaugurated

Today, the geothermal heating plant in Schwerin-Lankow, Germany, is officially being put into operation.

The project with a total cost of around €20.5 million has received support of €4.2 million from the European Regional Development Fund. Thanks to the plant, water at a depth of about 1300 meters with an average temperature of 56 °C is pumped upwards and can be used for heating. About 15% of the heating demand of Schwerin can be covered by the geothermal energy from the plant. The inauguration is taking place in the presence of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz, and the Minister President of the German State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig.

Thanks to this EU investment, the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern increases its energy independency in the context of the Russian war against Ukraine. The inauguration of geothermal heating plant is also an important milestone on the path towards climate neutrality of the city of Schwerin.
