EU Cohesion policy: More than €9.3 million for a just climate transition in Luxembourg

Today, the European Commission has approved the Territorial Just Transition Plans for Luxembourg, paving the way for investments of more than €9.3 million from the Just Transition Fund.

The Plan were adopted as part of a multifund programme for the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund+ and the Just Transition Fund.

The Luxembourgish economy faces a fundamental need for diversification, given the predominant role of the financial service sector. To reach this goal, investments in digitalisation and new technologies are foreseen: more than 18% of the EU allocation will support the digitalisation of businesses, including the development of pilot projects in the healthcare sector. In addition, specific parts of the population currently face barriers to access the labour market, as well as challenges related to reskilling in line with the rapid digital transition and constantly the evolving labour market. The need to reinforce long-life learning and to ensure better social inclusion more generally is urgent.

The entire territory of Luxembourg is eligible to receive JTF funding, with a more intense intervention in the South of the country, which features higher CO2 emissions. A pilot project will support energy recovery for heat production in the municipality of Differdange, which will benefit citizens, businesses, as well as the Luxembourg Science Centre based in the town. This project is in line with the EU mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Separate actions within the JTF specific objective are also foreseen, supporting energy efficiency as well as the reconversion of former industrial sites and the reskilling of workers in relevant sectors.
