EU Cohesion Policy: €89 million for a just climate transition in Denmark

Thanks to the Just Transition Fund (JTF) programme adopted by the Commission, Denmark will receive approximately €89 million in EU grants to support the country's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The  Just Transition Fund (JTF) will help reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030 while making sure that this transition does not leave anyone behind

The territories that will particularly benefit from the funding are North and South Jutland. North Jutland needs to transform greenhouse gas-intensive production processes, such as in the cement industry, into more climate-friendly processes. South Jutland has to mitigate the consequences of phasing out fossil fuel production in the North Sea.

The JTF will invest in research and innovation to develop alternatives to CO2-emitting fuels. It will support small and medium businesses to transition to circular economy processes, by making better use of materials and green technologies. Moreover, 10,200 workers of the polluting industries are expected to be up-and reskilled.

The so-called Territorial Just Transition Plans (TJTPs) identify the territories that will receive JTF support following a dialogue with the Commission and local partners in the framework of the negotiations of the 2021-2027 Partnership Agreements. The Commission approved the Partnership Agreement with Denmark in May 2022. The TJTPs also allow financing under InvestEU (a just transition scheme) and the Public Sector Loan Facility for Just Transition (combining Commission grants with European Investment bank loans).
