The Commission has approved €354.8 million under the 2022 tranche of REACT-EU to support the recovery and to pave the way for the digital and green transition of Spain.

This support will be channelled through the top up of five Operational Programmes (OP) of the European Regional Development Fund. These resources add up to the support already provided with the 2021 REACT-EU allocation in the Spanish programmes.
In Andalusia, the additional €191.4 million will finance the construction and renovation of hospitals and schools. Moreover, the region will use the funds to digitalise the public health services, help SMEs to mitigate the impact of the crisis, and to improve energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy, support sustainable mobility and reduction of the GHG emissions.
In the Balearic Islands, the additional amount of €28.2 million is allocated to strengthen the support to the fight against the coronavirus through the acquisition of medical, pharmaceutical and research material. It will also support working capital to the most affected SMEs, sustainable mobility, and the improvement of installations and equipment in schools, health centres and hospitals.
In Galicia, the €44.4 million allocation will be used to reinforce the financing of R&D for health, health waste treatment and e-health. The funds will be used for public sector and SMEs digitalisation, as well for providing working capital for SMEs in sectors with high potential for job creation, and for innovation in forestry, sustainable construction and fire prevention, among other sectors.
In La Rioja, the additional €5.8 million will continue supporting the acquisition of products and services for health services, such as medical, pharmaceutical and research material. In addition, the funds will be used to improve energy efficiency in public and private buildings, as well as for digitalisation and renovation of hospitals and schools.
In Madrid, the additional allocation of €85 million will reinforce the purchase of protective equipment in the health sector, increase testing capacity and finance staff needed to respond to the crisis. Furthermore, Spain will use the funds to increase renewable energy production in the region and improve public infrastructure, such as a building of the Hospital 12 de Octubre.
As part of NextGenerationEU, REACT-EU provides a top-up of €50.6 billion (in current prices) to Cohesion policy programmes over the course of 2021 and 2022. These additional resources should be used for projects that foster crisis repair capacities in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as investments in operations contributing to preparing a green, digital and resilient recovery of the economy.
