The Commission has approved an investment of over €175 million from the Cohesion Fund to upgrade and install a new drinking water and wastewater infrastructure in the Olt County, Romania.
EU Cohesion Policy: €175 million in better drinking water in Romania
- 06 September 2021

The new infrastructure will reduce leaks and water supply disruptions, helping Romania to meet the requirements of the EU’s Drinking Water Directive.
Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira said: “The project is a perfect example of how Cohesion policy directly benefits European citizens while preserving and protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency.”
This EU investment will contribute to the local socio-economic development by improving living standards for residents in rural areas and creating jobs in both the construction and implementation phases. The water treatment plants and the wastewater treatment plants will be subject to improvement. In particular, the wastewater network will be extended by 259.08 km and the works will rehabilitate 37.87 km of the existing system. At the same time, a further 64.41 km of discharge pipes will be laid and ten wastewater-pumping stations will be renovated while 156 new ones will be built.
