Last missing segment of A1 motorway in Poland to receive EU financing

The Commission has approved an EU co-financing of €447 million for the construction of A1 motorway in the south of Poland.

The A1 motorway, commonly known as the Amber Motorway, is a north-south motorway that runs through central Poland. The 80-kilometre co-financed stretch, which starts at the Częstochowa bypass and runs north to the town of Tuszyn, is an important segment in the A1 axis, which forms the backbone of the country’s transport system. It is the last missing segment of the A1 motorway, which when completed is planned to be 568 km long and to run the whole length of the country, from Gdańsk on the Baltic Sea, via Poland’s third-largest city – Łódź – and one of its main industrial regions, in Upper Silesia, to the border with the Czech Republic at Gorzyczki. The A1 motorway connects with the Czech D1 motorway.

The segment receiving EU co-financing today is set to be completed by November 2022. Together with the wider A1 motorway project it improves traffic and life quality in Poland. The new road will reduce the traffic burdens on outdated, poorly maintained roads and speed up the haulage time for freight coming from the north and south of the country, and beyond. Road users will be able to enjoy a smoother journey with better road surfaces and fewer traffic jams, which will result in a reduction of the number of road accidents. The planned motorway section will also provide passenger services equipped with facilities for adults and children for breaks from driving.

The A1 motorway is located within the Baltic-Adriatic corridor of the core Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). It is part of the European Road E75 and forms an important section of the North-South Trans-European corridor linking Scandinavia to the countries on the Mediterranean Sea.

In total €3 557 900 878 of EU budget funding has been invested for six sections of A1 motorway since Poland’s accession to the EU in year 2004.
