Road safety: European Commission rewards effective initiatives and publishes 2020 figures on road fatalities
|
|
The European Commission hosted the annual Excellence in Road Safety Awards on 18 November, honouring work by the European Road Safety Charter's community of members to improve road safety in Europe. The Road Safety awards received nearly 100 nominations. The event took place ahead of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday 21 November.
The Commission has also released the final figures for road fatalities in 2020. An estimated 18 800 persons were killed in a road crashes last year, a 17% decrease from the previous year. This indicates that in 2020, almost 4 000 fewer lives were lost on EU roads than in 2019.

On 25 November, five of these remarkable activities will be highlighted in a webinar to encourage more efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility. Groups of people, NGOs, social partners, research/teaching institutions, local/national authorities, public institutions, and public/private enterprises can register their initiatives to promote sustainable urban mobility year-round.
