Thanks to ERDF funding, this project will construct a new building to accommodate all the research teams working on biology for energy at the Institute of Biosciences and Biotechnology Aix-Marseille University (BIAM).

BIAM is a joint research institute developing biotechnologies focused on environmental preservation and biofuel production. It aims to work with innovative technologies related to soil decontamination; new enzymes for biofuel synthesis; mechanisms regulating plants’ uptake of phosphate; and the assimilation of physiological metals in micro-organisms.

On 20 April 2018, the first foundation stone of the future ERDF-funded building was laid on the site of the Cité des énergies. The building, covering 7 500 m2, is expected to accommodate 170 researchers, engineers, technicians and administrative staff working on biology for energy on one dedicated site.

This will be part of the Cité des énergies flagship project which has the goal of promoting excellence in the field of low-carbon energy and technology transfer.
