Investing in food systems transformation to ensure affordable nutritious food is a necessity highlighted in the IFAD Rural Development report 2021 and UNICEF “FED to Fail” report.

At least 3 billion people cannot currently afford healthy diets and 2 in 3 children do not get the nutritious diets they need to grow well. In addition, the September update of the Global Report on Food Crises shows that acute food insecurity is rising. This deterring situation happens in a context where the risk associated with large-scale land acquisitions on local food security is still persistent (Land Matrix Analytical Report III).

Several studies (CERES 2030, FAO, IFAD) provide estimates on the amount of additional investments that would be needed to end hunger and reach other SDG2 goals by 2030. They vary between USD 33 and 163 billion per year.

These additional spending would be justified considering the hidden costs generated by food systems (USD 12 trillion according to World Bank) and the true value of the benefits of sustainable food systems (“True Value” study from the Global Alliance for Food).

The publications “True Value” and “Indigenous people Food Systems” provide inspiring evidence on sustainable food systems. These are food systems based on agroecological practices that preserve ecosystems and benefit food security and nutrition.

UNICEF’s flagship report examines the latest data and evidence on the status, trends and inequities in the diets of young children aged 6–23 months, and the barriers to nutritious, safe and age-appropriate diets.

Food Finance Architecture: Financing a Healthy, Equitable, and Sustainable Food System

The future of farming: Who will produce our food?
Achieving SDG2 (zero hunger) in a situation of rapid global population growth requires a continued focus on food production.
