Message by Vice-President Margaritis Schinas on Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day - Yom HaShoah

9 April 2021 - Vice-President Margaritis Schinas participated in the event “‘Zikaron Basalon’ (‘living room meeting’) – The Holocaust Survivors: Who are they?” organised by the Delegation of the EU to the State of Israel.

In his video message, Vice-President Schinas stated:

"For us, Europeans, remembering the Shoah is more than a historic duty. It is indispensable to uphold our values and our way of life.

Recognizing all forms of contemporary antisemitism has been a key aspect in the European Commission stepped up efforts to combat antisemitism, which President Von der Leyen has entrusted me to lead.

To this end, the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance has been and continues to be a most useful tool."

He informed that by the end of this year, the Commission will present the first ever comprehensive European strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, a significant initiative symbolically and politically, three quarters of a century after the Shoah.

European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová addresses the Mayors Summit against Antisemitism

16 March 2021 - At the 'Mayors Summit against Antisemitism' organised by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), Vice-President Jourová stressed that “antisemitism needs a holistic response, where the European, national and local level work hand in hand.”

She stated that she looks “forward to working together to create a world where Jews are and feel secure, where they can express their own cultural and religious identity openly and without fear”. Vice-President Jourová also highlighted that:

"By end of 2021, the European Commission will propose to add hate speech and hate crime irrespective of whether they are based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation to the so-called list of “Eurocrimes” under the Treaties."

FUNDING PROGRAMMES
Jean Monnet Teacher Training - call for submission of projects on promoting the European way of life and EU values, including combating antisemitism

The European Commission online launch of the new Jean Monnet for Schools Teacher Training action, part of the 2021-2027 Erasmus+ Programme, will take place on 15 April 2021.

New funding opportunities under Erasmus+ Programme are now open for:

  • higher education institutions offering teacher training
  • teacher training institutes and agencies

In her Political Guidelines, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen committed to making the European Education Area a reality by 2025. The new Jean Monnet Actions, including Jean Monnet Teacher Training, will contribute by supporting education on EU matters in primary and secondary schools and VET centres. This, in turn, will contribute to achieving the Commission’s political priority of promoting our European way of life and EU values.
