Dear Members of the Community of Practice on Cities,

Welcome to the 13th edition of our Newsletter.

It has been a period rich of activities for CoP Cities. We had our annual plenary, a special event on local taxes and the release of two new policy briefs. We hope you found them rich of inspirations and we are looking forward for your cooperation while we are scoping and drafting our next batch of contributions.

As usual, keep in mind that this is a bi-monthly publication, with a new edition foreseen for the end of July 2022. For any feedback on this edition, or contributions to the following one, including highlights of your current work, upcoming publications, or events, please let us know at jrc-kctp@ec.europa.eu.

Highlights
Launch of the Science for Policy report “New perspectives on territorial disparities. From lonely places to places of opportunities”

The launch of the Science for Policy report “New perspectives on territorial disparities. From lonely places to places of opportunities” will be held online on the 23rd of June at 14:30. The report aims at identifying places with vulnerabilities in terms of local endowment, accessibility, or connectivity, using a spatial, multi-scalar and interdisciplinary approach to places. Results can contribute to bridging local, regional, and national concepts with European policies and instruments, to make the implementation of these policies more effective.

During the launch, the report's editors will present the outputs of the analysis and the policy recommendations to address spatial disparities in European territories. Experts and academics will discuss the report’s findings in relation to policy interventions and implementation to better support local development and territorial cohesion. A detailed agenda of the event and a link to attend the online launch will be sent before the event.

Forthcoming Activities and Events
World Urban Forum

The World Urban Forum is the most important global event on sustainable urbanisation and human settlement. The theme of this 11th edition is “Transforming Our Cities for a Better Urban Future”.

Several thematic sessions will be offered by the EC and its partners, including training events, SDGs in Action sessions or Voices from Cities contributions. The WUF 11 is a great opportunity to discuss urban issues; it allows the dissemination of the results of research activities on territorial trends and urban challenges, and extends and reinforces links and collaborations with external partners and European local and regional governments.
