Foreword

As we mark the halfway point in the year, we are delighted to issue the 100th edition of the RAN Practitioners Update. As a digital newsletter, the Update is designed to provide members of RAN Practitioners with monthly updates on the latest activity of the network, highlighting upcoming events, promoting recently published papers and showcasing some of the projects and people at the heart of it. This Special Edition Update takes a look back, at some of the highlights from Updates in recent years. This Update therefore, includes previously published content which tells the story of RAN Practitioners, the P/CVE challenges it has been addressing and the work being done to tackle it.

RAN Practitioners
An introduction

In 2022, RAN Practitioners produced a short, animated film which provides an introduction to the RAN Practitioners. network. The film – which some might have seen played at recent RAN Practitioners events – provides an overview of the network, its purpose, its activity and its outputs.

The film also describes the nature of the P/CVE challenges it is addressing and the range of topics covered by the different Working Groups. You can watch the film in full on the RAN website, as well as the RAN YouTube channel.

We encourage you to share the film with colleagues, peers and other members of your immediate networks.

RAN practitioners

2021 represented ten years since the inception of RAN. To mark the occasion, a series of films were made which reflected on the evolution of the P/CVE challenges, the network and the progress made during this time.

One of these films focused on the people who make up the RAN Practitioners network – the first-line practitioners who, with the support of RAN Practitioners, prevent and counter violent extremism in their daily work. The film, which acknowledged the scale, diversity, breadth, depth, talent and expertise of the network, hears from a range of practitioners who tell their stories about who they are, their work and their experiences of RAN.

You can watch the film in full here.

P/CVE challenges
Spotlight magazines

In early 2020, RAN introduced a new digital magazine, called ‘Spotlight’. The publication gives the platform to RAN Working Group leads, practitioners and other experts in P/CVE to share their views, insights and experiences on specific P/CVE challenges.

Since 2020, the publication – which features a series of articles, case studies and interviews with practitioners – has covered a variety of topics, including ‘Violent Right Wing Extremism’ (VRWE), ‘Youth engagement’, ‘Digital challenges’, ‘Mental Health’, ‘Lone actors’, ‘Disinformation’, ‘Ukraine’ and many more.

You can access all 14 issues of Spotlight on the RAN website.

The 15th issue on ‘Prisons’ will be published in the coming weeks.

The View

In late 2020, RAN Practitioners launched a new programme called ‘The View’. The progamme brings together first-line practitioners, academics and Member State representatives to exchange views on some of the most relevant and timely P/CVE challenges of the day, and to scan the horizon at emerging challenges and potential threats in the future.

The View has discussed issues such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital recruitment challenges, emerging threats following COVID and much more. Four episodes of The View have now been published, all of which can be found on the RAN YouTube channel: Episode One, Episode Two, Episode Three and Episode Four.

Projects and people
RAN Collection

The RAN Collection contains more than 200 inspiring practices – namely practices and projects which have been developed and delivered by some of the people that make up the RAN Practitioners network. The RAN Collection, which is continuously updated and expanded with new innovative practices, is a convincing testimony to the progress that is being made in the field of P/CVE.

The RAN Collection is designed to be a valuable resource for practitioners seeking examples of practices which can be adopted and adapted to their local/specific context.

You can find more information about the Collection and access the full suite of practices here.

Working Groups

During the summer of 2020, RAN Practitioners established a new set of Working Groups, including RAN Youth & Education, RAN Rehabilitation, RAN Prisons, RAN Health and RAN Families, Communities & Social Care.

At the same time, RAN Practitioners also welcomed a new cadre of Working Group leads, who were introduced to the wider RAN Practitioners network at the RAN plenary in October that year. To help practitioners get to know their Working Group leads, a series of short films, called ’15 people, 15 places’, were produced.

You can view the films on the RAN YouTube channel.

Upcoming events

There are no events over the summer period. The next events will take place in September 2022. For more information on all planned meetings over the coming months of 2022 please go to the RAN Practitioners website.
