Your monthly update from the Joint Research Centre
|
|
Dear colleagues,
our thoughts at the JRC are with the people affected by the earthquakes that devastated Türkiye and Syria last month. We stand in solidarity with the victims of this shocking and saddening disaster. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, assisting the rescue effort in the region. Our Disaster Risk Management team at the JRC has been providing technological support.
As stated by President von der Leyen, for more than one year now, Russia's war of aggression has been sowing death and destruction. Despite that, together with our Ukrainian partners, we have started working on shaping the reconstruction effort. At the beginning of February, President von der Leyen visited Kyiv together with 15 Commissioners and discussed about rebuilding the country in the high-quality, sustainable and inclusive way that the New European Bauhaus (NEB) community stands for. A capacity-building programme for Ukrainian municipalities to prepare the reconstruction starts in March.
As two years passed since the launch of the New European Bauhaus, it was time to take stock and publish its progress report. The initiative, with 600 partner organisations, reached millions of citizens and spread its vision of sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics. At the same time, the NEB Compass was launched, an evaluation tool that guides decision-makers who wish to apply the NEB principles and criteria in their projects.
Finally, February marked an important milestone for us as the College of the Commission adopted our scientific Work Programme for 2023 and 2024. Alongside our Revitalised Strategy and the re-organisation, the Work Programme will be an enabler for transforming the JRC and conveying our value proposition rooted in anticipation, integration, and impact. It is founded on our new portfolio-based approach that should enable us to provide science-for-policy in a more coordinated manner, while also maximising our capacity to anticipate challenges and tracking the impact of the resulting policies.
Happy reading,
Stephen Quest
JRC Director-General

World Cancer Day: Tackling cancer inequalities and disparities
|
The European Cancer Inequalities Registry (ECIR), the flagship initiative of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, has shown trends, disparities and inequalities in cancer prevention and care across EU countries, Norway and Iceland, during its first year of activity. It has helped to identify policy needs and provide resources to support competent authorities in their health investment decisions. On the other hand, it has also draw attention to potential data gaps, for future orientation of research needs and data calls to fill those data gaps.
The European Cancer Inequalities Registry provides:
- The Data Tool to explore interactively cancer inequality indicators. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) regularly updates and enrich the Registry, as new evidence becomes available.

Energy in a low-carbon world: trade in fossil fuels plummets, global energy self-sufficiency increases
|
A modelling exercise for a 1.5°C global warming scenario shows that energy trade shrinks to account for 13% of global energy demand in 2050, and energy production goes local as renewables increase to reach 75% share of energy supply.

Zero Pollution: New report draws lessons from the Oder River ecological disaster
|
An EU report published today analyses the massive fish kill in the Oder River in July and August 2022, one of the largest ecological disasters in Europe in recent memory. The analysis by the Commission (Joint Research Centre) and European Environment Agency identifies the likely causes and proposes recommendations to help prevent such catastrophes from happening again.

Using less chemical pesticides: European Commission publishes toolbox of good practices
|
Controlling pests that damage crops and plants is necessary both to safeguard food security and to ensure viable income to farmers for their production. This needs to be done while minimising the risks to people and the environment. Such an approach, using natural methods whenever possible and chemical pesticides as last resort, is called ‘integrated pest management’ (IPM). Today, the European Commission published a database presenting an overview of the IPM methods currently available, accompanied by a study assessing their effectiveness and prospects for their further uptake
