Your monthly update from the Joint Research Centre

Dear colleagues,

This month, the Commission launched the NEB LAB: a ‘think and do' tank for tangible projects. It connects the New European Bauhaus community further and facilitates the sharing of ideas about beautiful, sustainable, and inclusive changes. The launch was accompanied by a call for Friends of the initiative to involve companies, regions, villages and cities more directly in the NEB.

We have also announced the winner of the New European Bauhaus international architectural contest for a new building housing 400 researchers at the JRC site in Seville. The prize went to Bjarke Ingels Group, BIG for coming up with an incredible design covering the site with a cloud of solar canopies just like the ‘pergolas’ – shaded passageways – typical to this Andalusian city. The building will enable us to “walk the talk” by embodying the New European Bauhaus values of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.

Our ISPRA site inaugurated two new laboratories that will allow scaling up Commission's capacity to test car emissions. As you may remember, the Commission's competence to check emissions from cars is the result of the overhaul of the EU vehicle type approval legislation after the “Dieselgate” scandal. A clear example of our impact on EU citizen’s everyday life.

Happy reading,

Stephen Quest, JRC Director-General
