Dear colleagues,
This month the Commission launched the JRC-led competence centre on participatory and deliberative democracy. The centre adds to our roster of knowledge and competence centres; it will provide guidance, tools and resources to help EU institutions and organisations across Europe strengthen citizen engagement in policy.
The New European Bauhaus is a great example of this engagement in action The JRC gathered the views and experiences of thousands of citizens and organisations on beautiful, sustainable and inclusive solutions for our living spaces. The initiative reached a major milestone with the recent adoption of a Commission Communication, which takes inspiration from these ideas and sets out several policy actions and funding possibilities to drive the New European Bauhaus forward.
We have also opened our world-leading structural assessment and nanobiotechnology labs for researchers to test innovative building materials that can help turn the ideas of the New European Bauhaus to reality.
Another great news of this month is that the JRC made available two new modules of the popular SELFIE self-assessment tool for digital teaching and learning : SELFIE for teachers and SELFIE for work-based learning. The tool, developed in 2018, has already been used by over 1.7 million people across 82 countries in Europe and beyond.
And finally, this month’s science story looks at research we are doing to support the EU’s push for more sustainable everyday products - from washing machines to smartphones. A major aspect of this is our will to repair them, rather than throw them away. JRC research has been exploring how to assess that ‘repairability’, and how to design these products so that they are both more repairable and more reliable.
Happy reading,
Stephen Quest, JRC Director-General
