Carbon Dioxide Removal Launchpad Announced at COP27; Governments Commit to Build Demonstration Projects and Share Information

According to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), removing billions of tonnes of CO2 directly from the air is necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. To help us get there, on 16 November 2022 at COP27, the Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Mission launched their first ‘Sprint’ project – the creation of a CDR Launchpad. The CDR Launchpad is a coalition of governments who will work together to accelerate the pace of CDR advancements by investing in demonstration projects and sharing lessons learned.

IRENA and UNIDO support global energy transition through green hydrogen

On 8 November 2022, Francesco La Camera, the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Gerd Müller, the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have signed a joint declaration on advancing sustainable energy through the fundamental role of green hydrogen. In their statement made at the UN Climate Change Conference COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, both Organisations’ leads declared to jointly advance the transition towards sustainable energy through green hydrogen in pursuit of access to energy, energy security and economic.

IRENA and Partners Define Agenda for Global Industrial Decarbonisation

On 1 September 2022, IRENA, co-founding partner, Siemens Energy, and companies across all industry sectors, launched the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization at the G20 Investment Forum on Energy Transition in Bali, Indonesia. Established by adopting the “Bali Declaration”, the Alliance aims to support efforts to decarbonise industrial value chains, advance industry adoption of renewables-based solutions, and aid in the accomplishment of country-specific net-zero goals.

IEA and Ukraine deepen bilateral cooperation with new joint work programme

On 12 December 2022, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and Ukraine signed a two-year joint work programme to help the country's energy system recover from the destruction caused by Russia's invasion and lay the foundations for its transition to a secure and sustainable energy future. The agreement was signed at the IEA's Paris headquarters following a meeting between IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol and Ukraine’s Minister of Energy German Galushchenko. They discussed Ukraine's ongoing efforts to restore heat and power to its citizens in the wake of Russian attacks. Dr Birol and Minister Galushchenko also explored pathways to further deepen institutional ties after Ukraine became an IEA Association country in July.

23 governments plus the EU announce over 200 clean energy projects to demonstrate new technologies in response to climate crises

On 23 September 2022, 23 national governments and the EU, collaborating through Mission Innovation (MI), announced that they will coordinate to deliver 221 demonstration projects globally this decade to accelerate clean energy technologies in the hardest to abate sectors. The announcement, made at the 7th MI ministerial meeting in Pittsburgh, USA will drive public-private investment in technologies which need to be commercialised by 2030. The goal is to achieve tipping points in cost by 2030 to accelerate the delivery of technologies to decarbonise sectors responsible for more than 52% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
