New ERC Plus Grants in Work Programme 2026

The Work Programme 2026 has been revised to include a new funding scheme, ERC Plus Grants, which will support outstanding researchers from Europe and anywhere in the world with bold ideas and a vision for transformative research that goes beyond the scope of existing ERC programmes.

Dr David Bikard, from Institut Pasteur in France, was awarded the Gold Medal for his pioneering work on gene editing. He won an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2021.

 
Changes to the 2026 & 2027 Work Programmes

The ERC Scientific Council has decided to introduce several changes to the structure of grant proposals, the evaluation process and other elements. The first grant competitions under the new rules will open in July 2025.

 
Increased ERC funding for top global researchers moving to Europe

The ERC decision to increase the support for researchers moving to Europe has today been formally adopted. On top of its standard grants, the ERC offers additional 'start-up' funding to help new grantees establish their laboratories or research team in Europe. This funding is now being doubled from up to €1 million to up to €2 million.

 
Choose Europe for Science: ERC ‘super grants’

The ERC Scientific Council welcomes the offer of substantial additional budget for the development of a new larger, longer-term ERC grant.
