2024 edition applications
The 2024 applications have arrived!
The European Commission is proud to present the class of 2024: 96 applications from 25 European countries, across the five Award categories!

The applications received truly reflect the breadth and diversity of Natura 2000’s impact across Europe. They highlight initiatives in an array of impressive best-practice conservation and restoration initiatives. The applications also demonstrate the creativity and adaptiveness of European organisations and citizens in addressing the increasing challenges faced by European nature. The approaches showcased in the 2024 applications include – to mention but a few - eco-tourism, agri-environmental payments scheme, collaboration with clothing brand, eco-defence action and campaigns, voluntary nature contracts, awareness-raising, as well as the development of monitoring, information and citizen science schemes.

These numerous initiatives involve a wide-range of stakeholders – as well as local, regional and national government, and environmental NGOs, they include community organisations, volunteers, people with disabilities, electricity and mining companies, schools, leisure groups (such as anglers and divers) and social groups like scouts.  The applications also present collaborative partnerships including public-private partnerships and cross-border projects involving several countries.

The Award - now in its seventh edition - honours leading nature conservation achievements connected to Europe’s Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The Award is open to any organisation or person involved in Natura 2000, including public and local authorities, businesses, NGOs, landowners, educational institutions and individuals.

All 96 applications are online now!
The 2024 edition applicants have invested their time and resources in restoring connectivity in rivers, green corridors and flyways, among other habitats, anti-erosion activities, and species reintroductions. There are a particularly high number of actions tackling terrestrial and marine invasive alien species, as well as initiatives aimed at removing barriers to migratory fish, fencing initiatives to protect livestock, pest control, and approaches addressing the impacts of rural depopulation.

Their achievements as can be seen on the map have impacted habitats across the continent, including permanent and temporary wetlands and floodplains, forest landscapes, pastures and meadows, marine habitats, mires, active raised bogs and blanket bogs, salt marshes, coastal dunes and lagoons, as well as urban environments. They have also addressed challenges faced by many threatened animal species, from the smallest insects and spiders, through many different kinds of breeding and migratory bird species, amphibians, bats, migratory fish, small mammals including the otter and European mink, to the emblematic large carnivores such as the wolf and lynx.

It is impossible to do all the applications justice in a few short paragraphs. Give them all the recognition they deserve by visiting the Award website - see where the applications are located on the map, read in more detail about the activities carried out, and check out their photos and videos.

What happens now?
The evaluation process
All applications are currently being assessed by a team of independent evaluators.

The shortlist of finalists will be announced by the European Commission in March 2024. The high-level Jury will decide on one winner per category while, in parallel, the public will be invited to choose their favourite finalist through an online vote.  The application that wins this vote will be awarded the very special Citizens’ Award.  All six winners will be announced at the Award Ceremony in May 2024.
