Dear Reader,

Hope you enjoyed a nice Easter break 🐰🌸🥚

Here are the latest energy-related news

  • The Commission has launched 6 public consultations inviting stakeholders and citizens to have their say on the future EU budget and the policies it should finance. The EU needs to invest over €570 billion each year between 2021 and 2030 to meet its energy and climate targets. In addition, €690 billion is needed annually over the next decade (2031-2040) for investments in renewable energy, including solar, wind and biomass, energy efficiency and grid capacity. Have your say! The consultations are open until 6 May 2025.
  • Registration for the 2025 European Sustainable Energy Week is open. Taking place from 10 to 12 June 2025 in Brussels and online, the conference will engage hundreds of leading clean energy community voices in lively debates between each other and with the audience, exploring 5 main themes: competitiveness and investments in clean energy, energy affordability, renewables, energy efficiency, as well as decarbonisation and international cooperation.
  • The Commission has approved, under EU State aid rules, a €400 million Spanish State aid scheme to support the production of renewable hydrogen through the European Hydrogen Bank's "Auctions-as-a-Service" tool for the auction closing in 2025.

What happened on the ID-E side this past month?

  • We hold the ID-E Webinar Series #9 on the Affordable Energy Action Plan on Wednesday 9 April 2025. The event report is available in this edition. The recording is available here.
  • Did you miss the ID-E Plenary? The recordings are available on the ENER Youtube Channel.

What is coming up?

  • We will kick-off Round 18 of WG meetings in few days. This round will focus on Member States market maturity and financing solutions in the respective segment of the energy value chain. WG members will analyse and discuss the different levels of market maturity among Member States, the factors influencing these levels, and how different financial and non-financial solutions (including the pilots discussed in previous meetings) should consider national differences when being implemented.

ID-E Webinar Series #9: Affordable Energy Action Plan

Wednesday 9 April 2025. The 9th ID-E Webinar Series focused on the Affordable Energy Action Plan, a critical initiative by the European Commission aimed at reducing energy costs and enhancing energy security across the EU.

The webinar began with opening remarks from Angel Catalina Rubianes Angel of DG ENER, who emphasized the importance of the Affordable Energy Action Plan in the context of the Commission's broader goals for competitiveness. He highlighted the dual objectives of reducing energy prices and ensuring a fair and inclusive society, particularly for low-income households.

Robert Portelli from DG ENER provided an in-depth presentation on the Plan including its 4 pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Lowering energy costs with measures to reduce network charges, taxes, and supply costs, and to promote energy efficiency.
  • Pillar 2: Completing the Energy Union with initiatives such as the Electrification Action Plan, the Heating & Cooling strategy, and the Clean Investment Energy Strategy
  • Pillar 3: Attracting investment & ensuring delivery with tripartite contract, a new framework to stabilize energy markets by bringing together Member States, the Energy consuming industry and clean energy producers.
  • Pillar 4: Being ready for potential crisis with a new regulatory framework for security of supply and price stability, and price crisis preparedness.

The webinar featured a dynamic Q&A session moderated by the ID-E team. Participants raised important issues such as the complexity of permitting processes, the need for tailored PPA models, and the importance of stable regulatory environments. The discussion also touched on the role of state aid rules and the need for a balanced approach to grid investments.

The webinar concluded with a call to action for stakeholders to engage directly with the Commission's initiatives and provide feedback on the Affordable Energy Action Plan.
