Coal Regions Learning Academy has opened

The Coal Regions Learning Academy is now accessible online for all interested stakeholders. Its launch event took place at the College of Europe in Natolin on 14 June 2023. The Academy is a fundamental component of the Initiative for coal regions in transition in the Western Balkans and Ukraine. Developed through a collaboration between the World Bank and the College of Europe in Natolin, the Academy aims to assist stakeholders in the countries covered by the Initiative to successfully design and implement just transition strategies.

The Coal Regions Learning Academy (CRLA) comprises six high-quality e-learning modules aligned with the 3x3 matrix developed by the World Bank. They include various learning resources, such as informative videos, knowledge repositories, reading lists, and much more. The modules cover the following topics:

·         Institutional governance

·         People and communities

·         Environmental reclamation and repurposing of land and assets

·         Bankability of transition projects

·         Shielding measures for local communities

·         Recultivation and protection of health and environment

The launching event was attended by just transition stakeholders from Ukraine (members of a study visit organised by the World Bank and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management) and the Western Balkans.

Magdalena Chawuła from the World Bank and Marek Tabor from the College of Europe in Natolin presented the Academy to the attendees. During the event, Dr Agnieszka Gawlikowska-Fyk from Forum Energii discussed the findings of a report on a transition plan for Europe’s largest coal-fired power plant in Bełchatów (Poland). Subsequently, Dr Wolfhart Pohl, a World Bank expert, took the stage to present his authored module on Recultivation and protection of health and environment.

The Coal Regions Learning Academy received positive feedback from event participants, who found it to be a valuable and appealing tool for enhancing the capacities of various stakeholders.

To access the Academy’s modules, it is necessary to register at the GOXI platform, which hosts the Academy. After registration, users can enrol in and follow the online courses.
