On 22 February, the European Commission registered a new citizens’ initiative called ‘Ensuring a dignified reception of migrants in Europe’. Initiative organisers call on the Commission to adopt regulations to:

  • “Introduce a new mechanism for the distribution of asylum seekers in the EU […] (revise the Dublin Regulation);

  • Make binding in the Member States reception standards in terms of food, health, housing, education and work, which guarantee asylum seekers dignified living conditions, comparable throughout the Union.”

Organisers have six months to start the collection of support – aiming for 1 million signatures from at least 7 EU countries.

Status of support per Initiative – Congratulations for reaching milestones!
To be considered by the European Commission, citizens’ initiatives require 1 million valid signatures. Initiatives collecting over 1 million signatures should submit the statements of support for verification to national authorities.

Several initiatives reached the following significant milestones.

Two European citizens’ initiatives closed in February: ‘Green VAT’ and ‘Ensuring Common Commercial Policy conformity with EU Treaties and compliance with international law’ - which collected more than 275,000 signatures.

One initiative withdrew from signature collection: ‘Every European house equipped with 1 kw photovoltaic and 0.6 kw wind turbines using EU funding.’
