INTRODUCTION
April 2023

Dear Erasmus+ and European Solidarity Corps national agencies,

The Erasmus Generation Meeting held in Bucharest from 6 to 9 April attracted over 900 Erasmus+ alumni. Discussions focused on gaining skills through international opportunities and civic engagement of young people.

Language skills are essential for achieving both of these goals and OLS is supporting mobility program participants in building them. The annual meeting, held for the first time in 2022, provides an opportunity for the Erasmus generation to discuss the new Erasmus+ programme and the future of mobility.

As you may recall, last month we announced the launch of the OLS Video Contest, which is a great opportunity for OLS community members to use their language skills to win an Interrail Global Pass.

We have extended the deadline to 31 May to allow more participants to submit their entries. Your support and commitment are vital to the success of the contest. Please help us to promote it among your mobility participants. See Community managers & forums for details on the link to share with them.

The OLS team continues its work of producing new content for all its languages. Before the end of this month there will be another 245 hours of content for 20 languages. See Feature languages & news for more details.

Regards,

The OLS team

The UN’s English language day is celebrated on April 23, the day we commemorated the 407th anniversary of the death of playwright William Shakespeare. He was arguably the most influential writer in the English language and is credited with coining hundreds of words we use, including generous, radiance, and sanctimonious.

UN Spanish language day, or Día del Idioma Español, commemorates the death of Shakespeare’s contemporary, Miguel de Cervantes in 1616, and is intended to remind us of the wealth of Spanish culture and history. Cervantes is considered the greatest writer in the Spanish language, best known for his novel Don Quixote, which inspired the adjective quixotic.

TIPS

In the third episode of the Mobility & Intercultural podcast, mobility participants can hear about “learning shock” – the confusion and stress that results from changing to a higher education institution in another country, with its own rules and culture. Everybody going to study in another country will probably face this, so mobility participants should find this episode helpful.

OLS language community members can message one another on the platform by selecting “messages” on the drop-down menu that appears when they click on their name in the top right hand corner of the screen, once they’ve logged on.

Please remind students to contact tech support for help when they encounter bugs with learning content: eu-academy-support@ec.europa.eu
