Is numerical scoring important in the evaluation of grant proposals?
A recent study published on the Open Research platform F1000 Research analysed the importance of numerical scores in Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) projects. The aim was to assess whether there were differences in reviewer comments’ linguistic characteristics after the numerical scoring was removed in 2020. The findings indicate that the removal of numerical scores did not contribute to meaningful differences in the evaluation procedure of the ITN proposals or its outcome.

To secure raw materials, Europe turns to recycling
Extracting gold, silver and other commodities from discarded goods has industrial, geopolitical and environmental benefits for the EU. Dr John Bediako, MSCA researcher within the IONIC Barrier project, has criss-crossed the globe his whole life. He was born and raised in Ghana, earned a doctorate degree in South Korea and now works in Finland on a key challenge for Europe: reusing electronic waste, or e-waste. ‘It’s a hot topic,’ said Bediako, a researcher in the School of Engineering Sciences at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology. ‘We could clean up the environment and, at the same time, fuel our economy. That fascinates me.’
