MSCA announces first calls under Horizon Europe

With a budget totalling €6.6 billion over 2021-2027, the MSCA support researchers from all over the world, at all stages of their careers and in all disciplines. They also benefit organisations with support for excellent doctoral, postdoctoral programmes and collaborative research and innovation projects. Following the adoption of the Horizon Europe 2021-2022 work programme, the first calls for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships, Doctoral Networks and MSCA and Citizens opened on 22 June 2021.

Register for the MSCA Green Deal Cluster Event

The event will bring together excellent projects and researchers funded under the MSCA, as well as other research and innovation initiatives under the remit of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC). It will convene EU policymakers, researchers and experts to explore the role of research & innovation in achieving the goals of the European Green Deal.

‘I have the hypothesis that some viruses may be beneficial.’

Finding new viruses is easy – the hard part is understanding which ones cause disease, says Dr Lia van der Hoek, coordinator of the MSCA Innovative Training Network HONOURs and virologist from the Amsterdam UMC who discovered a human coronavirus called NL63, in 2003. She suspects that not all viruses may be harmful and that having a diverse collection of viruses in the human body may even be beneficial, but this is an open question, she says.
