It is with great sadness that the Commission learnt of the passing of Professor Emeritus Gertjan van Ommen, a leading figure in the 1+ Million Genomes initiative. The European Commission was privileged to have been able to work with him. We will miss him dearly.

Coronavirus: €55.2 million granted to research projects dedicated to digital health technologies addressing the pandemic

Digital technologies are essential in our response to this sudden and severe health threat. Awarding financial support to 13 excellent projects which have digital tools and Artificial Intelligence at the heart of their innovative approaches will deliver new solutions to protect healthcare workers, quickly detect and prevent the spread of COVID-19, and improve intensive care – all to contribute to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

INNO4COV-19 Open Call to support fast deployment of solutions to fight COVID-19

The new H2020 project INNO4COV-19 is set to assist up to 30 test cases and applications from several areas spanning from Medical technologies, Environmental Surveillance systems, Sensors, Protection of Healthcare workers and Artificial Intelligence and Data mining to support the fast deployment of solutions to fight COVID-19.

Coronavirus: EU interoperability gateway goes live, first contact tracing and warning apps linked to the system

Commission and Germany's Presidency of the Council of the EU underline importance of the European Health Data Space

At the virtual High-Level Conference "Digital Health 2020 - EU on the Move", the Commission and Germany's Presidency of the Council of the EU announced their intention to work closely together on a secure and patient-oriented use of health data for Europe, and EU-wide collaboration in this area, through a European Health Data Space for better healthcare, better research and better health policy making.

Proposal for a Regulation on European data governance (Data Governance Act)
The proposal is the first of a set of measures announced in the 2020 European strategy for data. The instrument aims to foster the availability of data for use by increasing trust in data intermediaries and by strengthening data-sharing mechanisms across the EU.

Call for tenders open: Cagliari hospital pre-commercial procurement to improve cancer diagnosis

Cagliari University Hospital in Sardinia invites interested bidders to submit offers for its pre-commercial procurement that is looking for new intelligent systems for improving ultrasound diagnosis and more accurate determination of the stage of rectal cancer. The aim is to enable autonomous reading and interpretation of ultrasound images to overcome the limits of human interpretation through a self-learning mechanism and to improve the accuracy of pre-treatment staging. This is also expected to help treat rectal cancer in the COVID-19 era. Deadline for submission of offers: 07/12/2020

The Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments network releases position paper on healthier environments
The Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments (SHAFE) network released its Position Paper on recommendations aiming to promote healthier environments for all citizens and make environments accessible, sustainable and reachable for all, with the support of ICT. Based on the desire to implement SHAFE across Europe, a concept was created in 2017 to foster happier and healthier people in all communities, leading to the SHAFE network's launch in 2018 as a thematic network to draw policy makers attention to the need of better alignment between health and social care.

Attendees will take part in a comprehensive set of talks, covering aspects such as medical data privacy (GDPR), awareness aspects from the patient’s perspective and specific elements to know from an attacker’s perspective.
