Carbon capture, utilisation and storage Forum

The third CCUS Forum edition hosted by the European Commission in cooperation with the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities took place in Aalborg on 27-28 November. The CCUS Forum aims to bring together each year stakeholders from industry, Member States, European Union institutions, NGOs, academia and many others to participate in discussions on the acceleration of the deployment of CCUS technologies in Europe.

This year’s edition gathered more than 450 in-person participants in Aalborg and up to 1400 participants connected online, illustrating the rising popularity of the event.

The interventions at the Forum of Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, the Danish Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, the French Minister for Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher and the Director-General for Energy at the European Commission, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, as well as the presence of Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark, demonstrated the growing interest in CCUS technologies to reach climate targets.

The recordings of the Forum can be found here:

It was an opportunity for the Commission to confirm the publication of the Industrial Carbon Management Strategy early next year and to announce the adoption of the new projects of common interest (PCI) and project of mutual interest (PMI) list, containing 14 CO2 infrastructure projects.

Moreover, the Commission announced launching two new initiatives: the knowledge sharing project network, to initiate work on common CO2 standards for transport infrastructure and the CCUS Observatory programme to monitor, report and verify CO2 captured from cement and waste-incineration plants. The Commission’s Joint Research Centre also presented the ongoing study on CO2 transport network modelling.

This Forum edition included stakeholders’ discussions on public awareness, the opportunities of an EU regulatory framework for CO2 transport, the key role of public-private cooperation as well as the funding and de-risking mechanisms to make carbon management projects attractive.

As announced in Aalborg, the 2024 Forum edition will be jointly organised in Pau (France) by the European Commission and the French Ministry for Energy Transition.
