The Blue Bioeconomy Forum: Autumn edition
Dear reader,
this autumn, the Blue Bioeconomy is truly at the heart of global challenges: Commissioner Karmenu Vella introduces the future prospects for the European Blue Bioeconomy, while we give a closer look at the role played by the Blue Bioeconomy in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Lucas Bosser from CPMR explains how European regions involve the sector in their innovation strategies, and Silvia Fluch from Ecoduna shares with us what the Blue Bioeconomy means to her and her company. You will also learn about advancement in microalgae biorefinery technology, with the results of the D-Factory project. Don’t forget to scroll down! Upcoming events and hot news are included at the end. And as usual, we start with the latest news from the Blue Bioeconomy Forum itself!

Towards the inclusion of marine genetic resources in future Marine Biological Diversity Treaty
The Intergovernmental conference on marine biodiversity held its first session to draft a legally binding treaty under the 1982 UNCLOS, governing marine biodiversity in ocean waters beyond national jurisdiction. Such an inclusion will likely have effect on the sharing of benefits coming from the Blue Bioeconomy

Characterization of plant carbon substrate utilization by Auxenochlorella protothecoides
Algae hold great potential as a source of renewable fuel due to their ability to produce refinery-compatible diesel and jet fuel precursors. Significant effort has been made to maximize productivity under photoautotrophic growth conditions; however, little progress has been made to discover and understand reduced carbon assimilation pathways or enzymatic degradation of complex carbon substrates in algae.
